Last week was a relatively light on marquee matchups, but boy, have things changed this week. The SEC and Big 12 both have two huge games to go along with one each for the Big 10 and PAC-12, and then you throw in the matchup between Notre Dame and Miami, and this is a big week! The downside is that most of these games happen after 7pm. But there are a few interesting games taking place early and they’ll be a nice segue into the main attraction(s) Saturday night.
Early Game to Watch: Virginia Tech @ UNC (noon ET) Oh how the mighty Hokies have fallen. A favorite to once again represent the Coastal Division in the ACC championship game, the Hokies have struggled mightily to start the season and their schedule is about to get tougher. Junior QB Logan Thomas has regressed in his second full season at starter and the running game is missing its customary pop. Frank Beamer’s team has started slow before, and I think they’ll rebound again. UNC fields one of the most talented but disappointing rosters in the ACC. Every year, they put 3 or 4 players into the NFL, but seem to always be a middle of the pack team. I don’t see that changing this week against Virginia Tech.
Other Games to Watch: Navy @ Air Force (11:30am ET) Northwestern @ Penn State (noon ET) Arkansas @ Auburn (noon ET)
Midday Game to Watch: LSU @ Florida (3:30pm ET) What a difference a year makes…at least, that what Gator fans are hoping. Last year, the Gators were manhandled by the Tigers in Baton Rouge (41-11). The Gators will tell you this is a different team. Sophomore QB Jeff Driskel has played above expectations and the running game has been exceptional. But LSU front 4 are like nothing the Gators have seen this season. Florida’s offensive line will be challenge from the get-go and they’ll need to win in the trenches for this one to be close. Playing at home will be a huge advantage, especially against the Tigers offense that has been inconsistent at best for the first five weeks of the season. I think the Gators will keep this close, but I think LSU just has too many athletes in the end.
Other Games to Watch: Oklahoma @ Texas Tech (3:30pm ET) Georgia Tech @ Clemson (3:30pm ET) Washington State @ Oregon State (4:00pm ET)
Late Game to Watch: Georgia @ South Carolina (7:00pm ET) What a night this is going to be, highlighted by this big SEC East matchup. This game features not only two of the best teams in the nation, but some of the top individual players as well. Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones and South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney are two of the top pass rushers in the nation and sure-fire 1st round draft picks. Gamecocks RB Marcus Lattimore is starting to look like his old self after tearing his ACL last year but he might not be the best back in this game. Georgia Freshman Todd Gurley is leading the SEC in rushing and is making an impact like Lattimore did his freshman year in Columbia. But this game will be decided by the QB play. When Gamecocks QB Conner Shaw is on, he’s very good. But he’s been inconsistent so far in his young career. Bulldogs QB Aaron Murray is playing the position as good as anyone right now. I like the Bulldogs winning on the road!
Other Games to Watch: West Virginia @ Texas (7:00pm ET) Miami vs. Notre Dame (7:30pm ET) Florida State vs NC State (8:00pm ET) Nebraska @ Ohio State (8:00pm ET) Washington @ Oregon ( 10:30pm ET)
