Valentines for Veterans

More than 500 elementary students from Marion School District showed their appreciation for veterans as they created valentines as part of the Bright House Networks’ Valentines for Veterans program. Bright House Networks donates the art supplies to the schools. The program was designed to educate students about veterans and the importance of recognizing them throughout the year.

“At the beginning of the project, I was amazed at how many students did not know what a veteran was,” said Karen Fry, art teacher for Frances Slocum Elementary and Kendall Elementary. “As a class, we discussed how much veterans did to protect our freedoms and why they might feel sad or lonely around this time of year.”

The valentines will come as a welcomed surprise to those staying at the Marion Campus of the Northern VA Hospital. Valentines are also planned to be delivered to the Hoosier Veteran Assistance Foundation in Indianapolis.

“Recognizing our veterans is an expression of honor and appreciation, said Tammy Thompson, Voluntary Service Specialist at Northern VA Hospital. “Valentines from our community schools give an extra special touch in saying ‘thank you’ who gave so much.”

Each year, we hope this project will show the community the importance of volunteering their time and talents.

“We were thrilled that Marion Community Schools wanted to participate again this year,  said Don Williams, vice president, Bright House Networks Indianapolis. “They do a wonderful job teaching students about our veterans and expressing that appreciation through artwork. Bright House Network is proud to support our veterans and we hope these valentines help make their day a little brighter.”
