The Egmont Lighthouse: On the Road with Dr. Libby O’Connell

Editor’s note: This summer we will be “On the Road” with our friends from History.  We are grateful to Dr. Libby O’Connell and her team for sharing their expertise and knowledge with us about Florida history.  Please enjoy the above video and learning more about the Egmont Lighthouse.

On the Road at the Egmont Lighthouse — One of the oldest working lighthouses in the United States, the Egmont Lighthouse is located in Egmont Key, Florida and was occupied by Union forces during the Civil War. From here they could monitor the bay for blockade runners, Confederate smugglers who rowed or sailed across the water, carrying anything from whiskey to salt. It was a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Have you visited the Egmont Lighthouse? Do you have questions about the historic Florida lighthouse?
