Retro Bill, who experienced severe bullying himself as a teen, seeks to comfort those who have been bullied by giving them both encouragement and advice. “Each one of us is unique and special and you always need to remember that,” he tells the students, who are rapt with attention. “When someone bullies you make sure you tell an adult—your teacher, your parents—so they can help make it stop. Don’t be afraid to do that,” Retro Bill adds. It doesn’t matter if the bullying happens in the hallway at school, or through a threatening text message from a “cyberbully.” Adults need to know and they can help, advises Retro Bill.
In his latest tour of Central Florida schools,, Boys & Girls Clubs, and at the 9th Annual Orange County Week of the Family Fun Day in Orlando in early November, Retro Bill was mobbed by young people who marveled over his Elvis-like hairstyle, flame-covered shirt and matching shoes, and his many funny anecdotes about school and life that are laced with sound effects.
“I was thrilled to see how the kids wholeheartedly soaked up my anti-bullying, Internet safety and good character messages,” Retro Bill said. “Kids are hungry for positive messaging, and need to be constantly reminded that teachers, coaches, parents, grandparents, counselors and police officers are there for them every day to help keep them safe and to help them solve problems in a healthy, safe way.”
Retro Bill is on a crusade to help put an end to the hurtful toll bullies take on individuals and society. His ultimate call to action, “realize your dream,” is meant to help students believe in themselves so they can transcend the negative effects of bullying and cyberbullying and enjoy life as they seek to succeed.
