Above photo (left to right): Keith Mastorides, Principal, Clearwater High School; Cara Ryan, Alexandra’s Teacher; Mayor George Cretekos, City of Clearwater; Ally Chandler, student and C-SPAN StudentCam winner; Brian Aungst, Corporate Sr. Director of Government and Public Relations, Bright House Networks; and Ed Hooper, State Representative participate in the award presentation recognizing Ally’s winning documentary in this year’s competition.

Bright House Networks applauds Alexandra Chandler, an eleventh grade student at Clearwater High School in Clearwater, Fla., on her second Prize place showing in C-SPAN’s national 2013 StudentCam competition. In response to the question, “What’s the most important issue the president should consider in 2013?” Alexandra produced “Guns In Our Schools,” a documentary about school safety and security. Alexandra received $1500 for her work, which aired on C-SPAN in April of this year.

C-SPAN’s national StudentCam competition, now in its ninth year, invites middle school and high school students to produce a five- to- eight minute documentary on a national policy issue. This year, C-SPAN received 1,893 video submissions from more than 3,500 students in 44 states and Washington, DC.

Documentaries were judged by a panel of C-SPAN education representatives and evaluated based on the thoughtful examination of the competition’s theme, quality of expression, inclusion of varying sides of the documentary’s topic, and effective incorporation of C-SPAN programming.

Alexandra is one of 146 students from across the country winning a total of $50,000, including one Grand Prize winner, two First Prize winners, eight Second Prize winners, 16 Third Prize winners and 48 Honorable Mentions. The 75 winning videos may be viewed at www.c-span.org/studentcam.

What do you think is the most important issue the president should consider in 2013?

I would like to tell everyone about my outstanding customer service story regarding Fred and his supervisor Tomeka. I called and Fred was my Customer Care Agent. He was very pleasant and informed me of each step that he would be doing. What impressed me the most was Fred appeared to enjoy his job! I asked for his supervisor Tomeka and informed her of how happy I was with Fred’s service and knowledge.

In addition, I wanted to share my story with everyone else. Fred solved my concerns in no time. He appears to LOVE his job and is good at what he does. I am a happy Bright House Networks customer.

Thanks again Fred and Tomeka.

I was watching the show “Suburgatory” the other night, and George (Jeremy Sisto) asked Dallas (Orlando’s Cheryl Hines), why she kept recording shows on her DVR in Standard Definition (SD), and it got me thinking…..It happens a lot, I come home and see my wife watching a program about housewives from somewhere and I notice something, she is watching the SD channel!

When you grow accustomed to certain things in life, it’s hard to go back. Things that come to mind are high thread count sheets, good beer and programming in High Definition (HD). Immediately, I hit the select button on the remote and choose the “Watch in HD” option, which switches it over for her. You’re welcome. And, just like….what was good becomes great. Instead of thanking me, MY wife shrugs her shoulders and says “I don’t think about it, I know where the channel is, I put it there and that’s it. Also, I’m pretty sure I don’t want to see these people in HD.”

I say “Can’t you tell the difference? Can’t you see HD is way clearer?” She can… It just isn’t all that important to her. The only exception is sports, where HD is a must, even for my wife.

Since this conversation, I’ve learned this phenomenon is not unique to my home having heard this same story countless times from friends of mine. “Can you believe they watch SD? We have HD!” only to be countered by head-shaking and eye rolling from their significant others to say it doesn’t really matter. (But it does.)

So I dare ask, is this just in my house or in my circle of friends or is this happening all over? Are you watching HD when available or are you still an SD kind of gal or guy?

Above photo: Many people joined together to celebrate at the Asian Cultural Festival last Saturday at Avalon Park in Orlando, Florida.

May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States.

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

Celebrating at the Asian Cultural Festival - Andy Montavon (Bright House Networks), Eddie Camacho (Bright House Networks),Priscilla Condemarin (Bright House Networks) , Monica Correa (Bright House Networks), Luis Martinez (City of Orlando) and Oscar Ortiz.

Like most commemorative months, Asian-Pacific Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill. In June 1977, Reps. Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. The following month, senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill in the Senate. Both were passed. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration. Twelve years later, President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month-long celebration. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law.

Communities celebrate the achievements and contributions of Asian and Pacific Americans with community festivals, government-sponsored activities and educational activities for students.
