“Why did you join the armed forces?”
“What’s your favorite memory of serving in the military?”
“What was the food like?”
These were just a few of the questions school children in Bakersfield, California had for veterans who visited their school during “Take a Veteran to School Day” on Veterans Day.
Take a Veteran to School Day is a national initiative developed by History Channel and its cable partners to link veterans of all ages with young people in our schools and communities. Bright House Networks teamed with History Channel for Take a Veteran to School Day in a number of our markets to help show our veterans how much we value their service and to build awareness of their sacrifices amongst our young people.
At Bakersfield’s Horizon Elementary, almost 400 students enjoyed a program that began with the Student Council leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The students then watched a short video produced by History Channel on why we observe Veterans Day and what it means to serve our country. After the video, seven local veterans took the stage for a fun and informative question and answer session. The event was also taped and will run on the local Bakersfield On Demand channel.
In Manatee, Florida, local JROTC cadets joined the festivities at Freedom Elementary. The cadets showcased a proper flag folding ceremony and shared about their future in the military, while the veterans told stories from their past and presented a fun review of the importance of the flag and its history.
At Sea Park Elementary School in Satellite Beach, FL, the Take A Vet to School Day event welcomed The Patrick Air Force Base K9 Unit.
Do you have any veterans in your family? How do you honor veterans on Veterans Day?
